Mountain weather, long vehicle rides and uneven walking make a few small items disproportionately useful. The useful way to approach this is to compare the parts of the day that actually affect you: transport, timing, group size, walking, inclusions and how much flexibility you want.
The useful core
Bring water, sun protection, comfortable shoes, a light rain layer, a phone battery and enough Colombian pesos for small purchases or extras. Keep important medication with you. For rural activities, insect repellent can also be useful.
Pack for temperature changes
Medellín can feel warm while higher or wetter destinations feel cooler. A thin layer is more practical than a heavy jacket. Air-conditioned transport can also feel surprisingly cold after a day in the sun.
Protect the phone you are using all day
A small power bank matters more than a second outfit. If you are around water or paragliding, use a secure case or strap and follow the operator’s rules about when phones can be handled.
What not to bring
Avoid bulky valuables, unnecessary documents and anything you will spend the day guarding. A day trip is easier when everything important fits in a small bag you can keep with you.
